DFM Painting Basics: How To Paint Iyanden Eldar

So Isaiah asked me how he should do his Eldar. Well I give him some tips, and those tips turned into an 2 page words document. And that two page word document has turned into the article before you. So let's start:

Paints Used:
• Sunburst Yellow
• Regal Blue
• Snot Green OR Liche Purple
• Red Gore
• Chaos Black
• Gryphonna Sepia Wash
• Leviathan Purple
• Devlan Mud
• Skull White
• Ultramarine’s Blue
• Warlock Purple OR Goblin Green
• Blood Red
• Codex Grey

Start with the Daemonic Yellow army painter spray. Which if you don't have any try using a white primer then going over those areas with Sunburst Yellow (or any yellow of your choice). Remember to thin your paints and it may take a coat or two (of three or four or five...) to get full coverage. And if you use an airbrush you always want to thin your paints to about the consistency of skim milk. The airbrush maybe needing only one or two coats.

The primed model, when wanting brighter colors use a white primer.

Next base coat the head, shoulders, and anywhere else you want blue to be in Regal Blue (Or any blue of your choice.)

After that hit the gems with either green or purple, this is going to contrast against the red guns or the blue used just to make the model pop a little more. I would use either Liche Purple or Snot Green. And use this same color with the power weapons just so things will meld together a little better.

Next hit the guns with a base coat of Red Gore, as well as picking out the eyes with the same red.

Once that is done hit any of the joints or cables with Chaos Black just so they don't get lost in the yellow. But don't go overboard with this color as your guys my look more like eldar imperial fists than Iyanden eldar.

And after all of that you should have a basic Lyanden Eldar!

But of course you aren't finished there.

Wash the yellow with Gryphonne Sepia, trying to just stay in the recesses.

Now if you went with green for the gems hit that with Thrakka Green wash. And if you went with purple wash it with Leviathan purple, same goes with the purple power weapons.

And finally wash the red bits with Devlan Mud.

Now you have an awesomely table top ready Iyanden eldar!

However there are a few more steps you can take to make it that much better. The basic principle is to go back over the washed areas with the same color you base coated them in just so the wash doesn't completely drown out the original color. Making sure to let the wash show through in the cracks and crevasses.

After that now you have a bad ass Iyanden eldar! But there is one more thing you can do...

With the sunburst yellow washed and re-base coated you can then take a little white, mix it with the Sunburst Yellow (I'd say mix it about 80% Sunburst yellow and 20% Skull white). Then take that new mix and paint it on the edges and highest areas of the model to give it a nice clean highlight. That way you have the darkest colors in the recesses, a nice middle color in between and finally a nice highlight to make it pop!

Then With the blue do that same kind of method with the yellow, however instead of mixing it, just use Ultra Marines Blue in place of the yellow/white mix. Highlighting only the highest edges and areas.

For the Liche purple, just take some Warlock purple and make some lightning bolts or streak effects in the Power weapons, and then use that color the same way like with the yellow and the red, only highlighting the highest areas and surfaces. And as a bonus step here, I recommend going back over those streaks or lightning bolts with just in the center of them, just to make them pop just that much more. But if you picked Snot green for the gems, I recommend using Goblin green in place of the Warlock Purple.

With the reds take some Blood Red and use that as the highlight, same with the all the other highlights, just high the highest points and surfaces.

And finally for the Chaos black, I recommend taking some Codex Grey and just highlighting very few areas that may get some light. This is just to make the black not look so dull compared to the other colors.

And once finished you have a truly epic Iyanden Eldar, ready to strike down any foe!

Now remember this is not to make an awesome showcase display model, this is purely just to have an awesome eldar army finished fast and looking good. And by the way this method only took me about 30-45 minutes, and most of that was dry time for the yellow and washes. Also this is no way any indication of my actual skill as a painter this was just written up to help get a quick army painted and on the table while not sacrificing appearance.

Ultra Moo'rines: The Sergeant is 50% Complete

For planet Ultra'moo!

After wasting a bunch of time trying to paint the whole squad while not exactly knowing how to paint this new color scheme, I just focused on the sergeant.

Grey as the base coat is the key. That has been helping out alot. Next, my yellow paint sucks so I have to undercoat it with white in high spots and red in low areas then paint yellow for the yellow to show and make the recesses orange. Everything else is pretty sooth.

I am still debating on what to use form the 'Ultra Moo'rines' symbol...Like inverted 'Omega' and 'Mu' (lower and uper case) or paint a tiny cow.

Tonight I hope I can paint more non-metallic metallic and the cow spots. Anyway, tell me what you thing so far on the DFM! Forum thread for Mat's Ultra Moo'rines.

I can't wait to show these off at D's in there display case!

Selling my First Space Wolves Squads!

Wow. These guys are from 2003. Oh, sweet 3rd Edition and your wonderful Rhino Rush and Sweeping Advance.

I was looking in my Mark 1 Army Carrier, a box, and I saw these guys. These are the first Space Wolves that I have ever painted. Not to bad, but they are not winning any 'Young Blood' awards. Looking back on these guys and remembering all the games, all the drunkhammer, all the fun and asking myself, "Why did I do the snow effect?"

I really wish I didn't do that. Any way, I need to make room for other models and hopefully some new guy to Warhammer 40K will buy them and get them winning games again.

I hope you sell for a good price on ebay my first squad. Check out ebay bids for this item. Also, rate these guys painting at Cool Mini or Not here (link fixed)!

DFM!'s New Banner: The Making of...

Sweet banner and completely original to DFM!

I was looking at the banner I posted about hour ago and thought that is would be cool to share some of the photos I took of the models I used to make the NEW DFM! BANNER. So here they are.

If you are curious about how I did the photo editing and stuff. I used Paint...I am still living in the 90s when it comes to this stuff. As far as the pictures, I used the 'mirco' setting then placed the miniatures on a sheet of paper then got my cool LED painting lamp and brought it all close to take pictures. Remember, photos are all about light...more like the crisper they are...generally.

Blurry...next picture.

This one looks like a cat fight is about to erupt...not going to work.

Getting better but way to much shaft action in Colette's face...not the right action I am looking for.

To much focus on the Space Marine...kinda like all our old stories before the Erase-ning!

Getting better...I like it lets do one more do see what happens...

I got it...zooming out helped focus my fantastic Cannon Powershot SD1200 IS, f'n best camera ever made.

After about 2 hours on MicroSoft Paint...Mark III Banner complete...

...then someone talks about "Why is there no fantasy?"...g-uh. Fine, here is an orge.

Old paint files plus Mordhiem Swamp Orge equals I am not playing with the banner for another year.

Make the GWSeattle Bunker Marine a Space Wolf

Just a future Space Wolf!

Alright boys and girls let me inform you that at the GW Seattle Battle bunker there is a 8ft Space Marine being constructed as we speak. Actually, I would say more like being repaired.

Anyway, you must go to GW Seattle Bunker's Facebook Question Page and vote on this Space Marine becoming a "Space Wolf!"

I hear you already with your little high pitched little girl voice, "Why Space Wolves? I like Imperial Fists and Space Sharks better!"

My answer is this...Imperial Fist don't have their own codex and what the hell is a Space Shark, I never read a book about the Space Sharks in the Black Library so they must be lame.

Still not siding with me. Well, here is one more reason...I like Space Wolves and I think it would look cooler as Space Wolf than an Imperial Fist...which by the way isn't as cool as Space Wolves because again...no codex and they have way few Black Library books than Space Wolves.

Okay...last thing. All Tactical Space Marines wish they had a close combat weapon, a bolt pistol and a bolter...unless your army has that already--Blood Angles--or something cooler--Grey Knights...but anyway, you want them all, Space Wolves have them all and yo sucka Nilla Marine variants--cough, Imperial Fist and Space Sharks--wish they had them all.

Win for Space Wolves...if you wanna be a member of COW you defiantly should vote for Space Wolves because the COW Ultra Moo'rines are actually based on Space Wolves--Thundercow Hoov'alry GO! I'm going to build one in a few months after I paint all my Malifaux stuff.

So please vote here!

Thanks,

Mat

Lord of the Rings!: Even Cooler Source Book News!

"One ring to find the rumors and in the darkness bind them."

Well my avid followers, I have dug upon some more news as I searched the pool of Galadriel for the strands of the future...ALL of the Lord of the Rings Source books have been removed with 2 odd exceptions! The only 2 remaining rumors were the "A Shadow in the East" and the "Legions of Middle Earth" book.

It is a fact, this Legions of Mid-earth is better than the French Foreign Legion...just saying.

This is unusual because the "Legions of Middle-Earth" book contains the most widely used rules for Isengard, Rohan, and quit a few in between. This can only mean that GW are coming out with one MEGA-book to include all the rules and profiles for all the Source books they took out. WIN! That is a lot of new and updated rules! That includes Gondor, Haradrim, Mordor, Arnor, Easterlins, Hobbits, Elves, and more! This is a very anticipated release--except for the Matt Ward part--and I certainly can't wait for it.

Ninjas better be in there...I can smell them.

That means more Moria goblins, Sauron, awesome'r Arnor, and better Mumaks...I love my Mumaks!
