Real Local Gaming News!: The Hive in Redmond, Oregon going out of Business!

The Hive will be missed!
The Hive Video Games and Toys in Redmond, Oregon is going out of business on August 25th after almost two years from opening it doors at there new location in downtown.

It is sad to hear that a store that supported the hobbies of Wargaming and Trading Cards is no longer going to be with us.  There are so few stores in the Central Oregon area that supported Magic the Gathering, Dungons and Dragons, and Games Workshop games specifically Warhammer 40k and Fantasy and other wargames like Warmachine.

Check out The Hive's Facebook for updates and sales. Importantly, remember to support your local business that support nerd gaming like Main Phase Gaming and D's Hobbies.

Night Lords, Blood Angels, And Massacres - Oh My!

Hey this is Dylan and ill be posting for DFM for a while! Just the other day I was playing some 40k at the  D's and I decided I was sick and tired of using a codex that didn't represent my army(Night Lords) correctly so here's what I've seen other players do and what I did: used the Blood Angels codex to represent Night Lords. And I LOVED it! Here is the list that I used
HQ:
Librarian w/ Terminator Armour(Psychic Powers Sanguine Sword and Smite)
ELITES:
Sanguinary Priest w/ Lightning Claws and Jump Pack and Brother Corbulo
Terminator Assault Squad
TROOPS:
11 Death Company
10 Tactical Marines w/ 2 Plasma guns and Sargent Power Fist
10 Tactical Marines w/ 2 Plasma guns and Sargent Power Fist
FAST ATTACK:
10 Vanguard Veterans w/ Jump Packs, Lightning Claw, and Melta Bombs
10 Vanguard Veterans w/ Jump Packs, Lightning Claw, and Melta Bombs
I think it worked rather well, as I beat one of my good friends who is rather good at 40k. (That's right, I'm lookin at you Ben Schimoller)
This is my first attempt at summarizing a game I played like 5 days ago, so cut me a little slack. My opponent was playing Space Marines and his list was rather shooty with (as best as I can remember): Lysander, a Sternguard Veteran Squad in Drop pod, 4 or 5 Tactical Squads in Rhinos, 2 Dreadnaughts w/ double Autocannons, and 2 devestator squads w/ 4 missle launchers each. The game was kill points and he had first turn. One of the key moments in the game was when I used Corbulo's special rule to re-roll my siezing of the initiative which earned me the first turn! The first 3 turns of the game went along the lines of my veterans tearing stuff up(including wiping out the Sternguard in 1 turn of combat) and him having a hard time killing anything because of my Sanguinary Priests. However, at turn 4 the tables began to turn. My units started to die from the amount of shots being poured into them and it soon became apparent this would be a close game. In the end, random game length saved me, as the game ended with me having TWO Tactical marines left on the board, but more kill points then my opponent, ending in a bloody victory for the Night Lords.
The only changes I would make to this list is the replacing of the tactical marines with Assault Marines. Anyway, that's all for today, as usual comments are appreciated. Enjoy!

War is Here!: Battle for Karak Kadar Warhammer Fantasy Apocalypse Free Event on June 2nd

He is ready! Will you? Prove it, bring your strongest Soldiers to the battle!
Death Fears ME! and Central Oregon Wargaming are going to hold their first ever Warhammer Fantasy Apocalypse game at D's Hobbies.  This is the game to watch or participate in if you are enthusiastic about miniature wargaming.  COW! Members are gathering and building terrain specifically for this event.  The organizers for this event are Isaiah and Carl, and there are really getting this game together.  Please thank them when you see them!

Here is a bit of storyline Carl has going for "Battle of Karak Kadar!"
Karak Kadar, an ancient and powerful stronghold of the dwarves. Built inside a mountain itself, as the dwarves have often done in ages past. Its entrance was a mighty hall at the foot of the mountain, called the 'Anvil', gates and walls of enormous proportions on either side. There those walls have stood for ages, long in years even for the race of dwarves.
Yet a storm is coming, that even these stubborn walls may not weather. An army of chaos and destruction, swift and brutal, has swept down along the World's Edge mountains; from the East of Kislev, to the haunted reaches of Sylvania. The dwarves, ever being the stout allies of men, have been marching against the horde since its first steps near the mountains. They slowed the advance of the army, whilst the men of the Empire gathered. Although they slowed the swarm, they far from stopped it. Even when the armies of the Empire came, the forces of destruction were not done.....

- Frederick Augustine, Chronicler, Notes of Battle for Karak Kadar: Part 1
Hope to see you there! RSVP on the blog and forum and the Facebook Event page. We will have at DFM! Webmeeting on May 25th discussing details of this event and future events, everyone is invited, a mic installed on you computer is recommended if you are wanting to participate.

Warhammer Fantasy Apocalypse Event: Insight For The Coming Battle...

If you live, you'll live to just fight again.
From Carl, our scribe, to provide our generals insight into the battle in the perceivable future.

War, gruesome and bloody has swept through the east of the old world.

The Tsarina of Kislev had been receiving reports of small chaos war bands moving throughout Northern and Eastern Kislev. She sent an emissary to the Empire, warning of their presence, yet it was too late.

These bands of warriors from the far north were no scattered war bands. It was a much larger force, moving in small groups to avoid detection. In a tide of blood, they swept through the villages and towns between the mountains and Kislev.

Foul and corrupted beasts came from the forests, adding their braying prayers to the dark gods with those of the North men. In the valleys at the feet of the mountains, the Dark fey guarded a foul tower of sorcery, sticking from the earth like a foul black thorn.

The Dwarves, the greatest and oldest allies of men, came to the aid of beleaguered Kislev. Yet for all the strength and resilience, they could not drive out the forces of chaos arrayed against them. The Warriors from the North, and their bestial allies drove south along the mountains, slowly beating the Dwarves down. The dark and evil kindred of the fey had sated their taste for blood, and remained in their shadowed valleys, collecting those who were unfortunate enough to still be breathing.
As the hordes drove south, their ranks were once again swelled. Another army of the North men had come, the promise of bloodshed driving them ever onwards towards the battle. Ogres and giants came from the hills to feast on the bodies of men and beast, like carrion birds.

Yet now, a vanguard from an army of the Empire bolstered the ranks of the Dwarves, and fought valiantly. Yet the forces of Chaos still drove south.
As the foul armies of corruption crossed into the Empire, an army of men had assembled to face them. Between the Dwarves, Men, and fighting between the two war bands, the invaders were halted.

Yet they were not done.

The blood-shed had been great, and the powers of their bloody god flowed through them.

"It" called for more. More blood!

Their fowl priests and Shamans brayed and screamed, calling for the army to move to the southeast. Their bloody tide carried them to the foothills of the mountains before. They were heading for Karak Kadar, the destruction of that Dwarven stronghold would be their prize.

This was to be a decisive battle, determining the course of this fast and gruesome war. The High Elves, noble and elegant came to aid the Dwarves and Men. Yet even as the forces of order had their ranks bolstered, so did those of evil and chaos. The vampires, foul creatures and necromancers came from Sylvania, looking to fill their own ranks with corpses, and their veins with fresh blood. And beneath all this, far beneath, there was another sound.

Countless feet scurrying through tunnels.

More reports will be filled as the coming of June 2nd approaches!

BATTLESCAPE! Free Terrain Tutorial Event on May 26th!

Fuel the War Effort!
On May 26th, Isaiah and Carl will be presenting a COW and DFM! Free Event featuring how to make affordable great looking terrain. This event is to help bolster the terrain for the Warhammer Fantasy Apocalypse game being held on Jun 2nd at D's Hobbies.

This weekend of May 12th, Carl and Isaiah will be collecting foam materials from local business like Costco, Petsmart, and Petco.  Warning: There might be some dumpster diving!  Also, they are eagerly looking for volunteers.  Check the forums and facebook with updates on material gathering.  Also, they will be gathering flock, paint and glue.  Participants are encouraged to bring supplies as well.

The terrain day, BATTLESCAPE!, will feature Multi-Tier Hills.  Our host will show you which tools to use and how to cut your tiers. How to construct and paint with ease.  The session should be less than 2 hours.  Just a note, waiting for drying between steps.  There might be a blow dryer or hear gun maybe present to speed time.  Also, short 500 to 1000 point games will be played between stages if their is enough interest.  Bring any army, and wargaming system!

Participants will walk away with one complete multi-tier hill or they can "Fuel the War Effort" by donation it to COW to improve the terrain present at D's Hobbies.

Hope to see you there!

WEBINAR!: DFM! and COW! Super Awesome Townhall Meeting for April 19th

...and there will be pie.

Just finished the FIRST ever DFM! and COW Super Awesome Townhall! It was awesome and we talked about the a few things. Here they are:
  • Club Mission: To have fun and play games!
  • Club Strategies:
  1. Get new players in to wargaming! Magic the Gathering players.
  2. Get the word out on events! More 'friends' on Facebook, more activity on the forums, more blog posts on blog! If you have an idea for an event post it here!
  3. Schedule Monthly Events! Plan events for the whole year and promote an event 2 months out!
  4. Involve more stores! Get games going at The Hive in Redmond, Mind Phase in Bend, and Legacy Gaming in Prineville.
  • What YOU want out of the club! Mostly hold events and grow wargaming in Central Oregon!
  • Events for the FUTURE! We are thinking about a Zombie Kill-team like campaign in October; a event where you bring a new game (any game really, except 40k and Fantasy) and play with anyone there in games like Warmachine, Infinity, Malifaux; and holding tournaments every three months.

We did agree to continue the meetings in order to check progress on strategies, finalize event planning, and share ideas about making the wargaming community more fun!

Thanks to everyone that showed. We are doing this again on April 19th at 7:00pm to 7:30pm on Tinychat.com through Facebook!

See ya'll next time,

DFM! In Bellevue, WA!

About to take this by storm!

DFM! might start up in Washington. After talking to a few stores and miniature table top enthusiasts, their seems to be a need for clubs that do not focus on Warhammer 40K. Looks like DFM! may have to step in. DFM! will focus on Warmachine mostly, but any mini game is good to go.

FREE EVENT!: War Just Got Bigger Warhammer 40K Apocalypse at D's Hobbies on March 18th

This event is HUGE!

Message from Isaiah:

There is a FREE EVENT at D'S HOBBIES on MARCH 18, 2012 at 11am, doors open at 9am...unless D's changed their store hours! Some food and small Prizes will be available for players during the Apoc game. We will be promoting the game Warhammer 40K to people who may have never heard of the game or of wargamming in general. This game is just for fun and to show off your models, and remember in Apocalypse almost anything goes!

No need for force organization carts :o, just come to play ;D. Please post Army and list if you got one in the message boards.

We will break into teams of Good versus Evil-
Good: Imperial Guard, Space Marines (All Loyal Chapters), Witchhunters, Grey Knights, Eldar, and Tau.

Evil: Chaos Space Marines, Demons, Dark Elder, Necrons, Orks, Tyranids.
The game will be played with the Priority rule from LORD OF THE RINGS: at the end of any turn before the next turn begins both sides roll a D6 to determine which side goes first by the higher roll, in the case of a tie re roll. Continue each turn not just in the first however seizing the initiative is still used in the first turn. Deployment will be 12” from the 6X4 table edge for all models that want to deploy on the 6X4. All models wanting to start in the 4X4 table must start from the far table edge 18” into the 4x4. Reserves can also come from the 4x4 table edge 18” and/or the 6X4 table edge. Out flanking will apply to only the 6x4 table edges infiltrating rules are applied to both the 4X4 and 6X4 however.

There will be 2 objectives placed on the center of the 4X4 tables which act as the players Landing station in which they will need to hold in order to leave the planet. The players must have the objective by the end of the game or suffer a total loss on the table (if the player cannot capture their station or the other players in one full turn then every tank/vehicles or monstrous creatures model left on the board is counted as destroyed and are removed). If the enemy successfully captures the opposing players landing station then all models that are on the opposing team fall back. If it is contested at the end of the game then the players roll off and the higher roll wins the contested objective. Both objectives count as having the supreme headquarters rule: all units within 12” of the marker benefit from counter attack, fearless, Night vision/acute senses, tank hunters.

The center objective is a powerful shield generator that gives all models within 6 inches of it to receive a 4+ involve save, which also counts in the first round of close combat. However, once it is contested the power is off until one player controls it freely. Any player controlling the power station may try to put more power into it and boost the involve save by +1:

Roll a D6 and read the result.
1-2 The objective blows up all models in D6 range of the structure take strength 8 AP1 melta hit vehicles are hit at their facing to the blast.
3-4 The power is surged destroying the source. The involve save is increased but only works until the controlling players next turn and shuts off and is treated as dangerous terrain but is smoking so get a +1 cover save and also still counts as an objective.
5-6 increases the involve save by 1 until the end of the game.
A single player may only attempt this once per game and must declare they are doing it before the shooting phase but anytime in the movement.

The two moving objective count as malfunctioning servitors with air strike Coordinates that give the controlling player a onetime orbital bombardment that only scatters one D6. Both players scatter the servitor in no man’s land in the center of the 6X4, 1D6 +6 (this represents the servitors base move and the run.( go off of the small arrow on the direct hit only 6” except for deployment it will stay dead on. Treat the movement like a drop pod when it meets anything, move minimum distance to avoid the obstacle. This does not count as deep striking.) scatter both servitors after deployment and continue to do so until it is captured before the beginning of the controlling players turn. Both servitors are able to be captured by the opposing player and used the bombardment, but once the objective is captured it is free to move as if within the unit and will only stop and start scattering again if the unit dies to the last man. Also, if the Good Team successfully captures and gets the servitor back dead or alive to the landing pad the team counts as having 2 objectives. If the Evil Team captures and kills 1 servitor in close combat the unit in control will count as 2 objectives .(the evil players unit counts as scoring on its self, if the unit dies leave one model to act as the 2 objectives until the end of the game. It cannot move after this point but can be captured. This will also be true if the evil team kills the other servitor. (The servitor has the same stats of a servitor in the Space merian/Imperial guard cotext. the servitor cannot be directly targeted, if the servitor dies by miss fire the objective stays but stops scattering but can be picked up by a unit and use the bombardment, but will only count as 1 objective from then on. Even if it gets to the good teams base or is killed by the evil team.)

All non-vehicle models can capture objectives, including monstrous creachers, walkers, and transports with a unit in them can capture, not without a unit in it. Objective will be scored as in the warhammer 40K rulebook: 3” range.

The end of the game the winning side is determent by the number of captured objectives on either side. In a tie, both sides proved to be too equal.

CAMPAIGN: Destroy Opposing Armies

Don't get tagged!

Starting a 40K campaign on Feb 5th. Will cost $10 and we are going to try to do it every Saturday until we're done. We will also be using the Planetary empire rules and tiles.

Warhammer 40,000 Campaign Rules
Army List
All current army books can be used in this campaign. It’s possible that as the campaign continues that armies could receive a new codex. New codex’s can be used the week that they are released.
Armies may only use a single special character in their list.

Points

Game 1-750 points
Game 2-1000 points
Game 3-1250 pints
Game 4-1500 points
Game 5-1500 points
Game 6-1750 points
Game 7-1750 points
Game 8-2000 points
Players Receive an extra 50 points for each additional tile that their opponent controls.
Players can receive an extra 50 points for the manufactorum’s they control.

Game Map
- Planetary empires is played on a tile map, before the game begins players roll 2D6, the player with the highest roll places the first building. The player to that persons left then places a building, this continues until all the buildings are placed. The player who lays down the last building is the first player to place their flag claiming their piece of territory. Then the player to that persons right places a flag, this continues until each tile has been claimed.
No building may be placed in a tile next to a Hive city tile

Fighting Battles
- The player with the least amount of tiles is the first to challenge another player to a battle. This continues until all players have been paired up.
If there are an odd number of players then after everyone else has paired up for battle then the odd player out may challenge any player, this will mean that one player will end up playing 2 games.
Players with bonus points due to manufactorum’s and facing opponents with extra tiles may spend their extra points to add to their existing army.

Conquest
- After a game players may attempt to capture a tile to expand their territory. They do this by rolling 2D6 and scoring 3+ if the tile is adjacent to their territory or a 7+ if it is not.
Players may only take tiles if they are victors, a draw gains you nothing.
Players may only take tiles from their opponent that round or from any players who are not present during that round. It is assumed that their army was to preoccupied to defend their territory.
Players receive a -1 to their dice roll if there are any ruins or defense line on the tile.
Players receive a -2 to their dice roll if their attempting to take a space port.
Players receive a negative modifier to their dice roll if the tile is on or around a shield generator
Players receive a +1 to their first dice roll if they scored a major victory during this round of battle.
Players receive a +2 to their first dice roll if they scored a massacre during this round of battle.
Players may re-roll a single D6 during this round when attempting to capture a tile if they captured the bonus objective.
Players that are attempting to capture an enemy tile may attempt to take more than just one. Players receive a -1 modifier for each extra tile they attempt to capture after the first, this is cumulative. However, if a player is attempting to capture more than one tile and fails in their attempt then they have been counter attacked and the defending player may attempt to capture some of the attackers tiles but receive a -2 to their dice rolls in addition to an other modifiers. The defending player may only attempt to claim one tile.

Buildings
- Each army receives a number of points for each different building that
Power stations - Player with the most points from power stations adds +1 to dice rolls for picking deployment areas, seeing who goes first, and reserves.
Shield generator - Gives negative modifiers to players trying to capture the tile and surrounding tiles.
Manufactorum - Player with the most points from Manufactorum’s receive 50 bonus points to spend on their army.
Command bastion - Player with the most points from command bastions rolls a D6, on a 4+ they may give a single unit in their army one of the universal special rules.
Space port - All space ports count as being next to each other when it comes to capturing territory.
Hive city - Hive cities count as a single power station, shield generator, manufactorum and command bastion.
This is a list of the general rules we'll have. Feel free to keep them for yourselves. After we finish this one we will be doing a fantasy campaign using Mighty Empires.

Please inquire below if you would like to play after the start date of February 5, 2012.

DFM Painting Basics: How To Paint Iyanden Eldar

So Isaiah asked me how he should do his Eldar. Well I give him some tips, and those tips turned into an 2 page words document. And that two page word document has turned into the article before you. So let's start:

Paints Used:
• Sunburst Yellow
• Regal Blue
• Snot Green OR Liche Purple
• Red Gore
• Chaos Black
• Gryphonna Sepia Wash
• Leviathan Purple
• Devlan Mud
• Skull White
• Ultramarine’s Blue
• Warlock Purple OR Goblin Green
• Blood Red
• Codex Grey

Start with the Daemonic Yellow army painter spray. Which if you don't have any try using a white primer then going over those areas with Sunburst Yellow (or any yellow of your choice). Remember to thin your paints and it may take a coat or two (of three or four or five...) to get full coverage. And if you use an airbrush you always want to thin your paints to about the consistency of skim milk. The airbrush maybe needing only one or two coats.

The primed model, when wanting brighter colors use a white primer.

Next base coat the head, shoulders, and anywhere else you want blue to be in Regal Blue (Or any blue of your choice.)

After that hit the gems with either green or purple, this is going to contrast against the red guns or the blue used just to make the model pop a little more. I would use either Liche Purple or Snot Green. And use this same color with the power weapons just so things will meld together a little better.

Next hit the guns with a base coat of Red Gore, as well as picking out the eyes with the same red.

Once that is done hit any of the joints or cables with Chaos Black just so they don't get lost in the yellow. But don't go overboard with this color as your guys my look more like eldar imperial fists than Iyanden eldar.

And after all of that you should have a basic Lyanden Eldar!

Back View

But of course you aren't finished there.

Wash the yellow with Gryphonne Sepia, trying to just stay in the recesses.

Now if you went with green for the gems hit that with Thrakka Green wash. And if you went with purple wash it with Leviathan purple, same goes with the purple power weapons.

And finally wash the red bits with Devlan Mud.

Now you have an awesomely table top ready Iyanden eldar!

Front View

Back View

However there are a few more steps you can take to make it that much better. The basic principle is to go back over the washed areas with the same color you base coated them in just so the wash doesn't completely drown out the original color. Making sure to let the wash show through in the cracks and crevasses.

Front View

Back View

After that now you have a bad ass Iyanden eldar! But there is one more thing you can do...

With the sunburst yellow washed and re-base coated you can then take a little white, mix it with the Sunburst Yellow (I'd say mix it about 80% Sunburst yellow and 20% Skull white). Then take that new mix and paint it on the edges and highest areas of the model to give it a nice clean highlight. That way you have the darkest colors in the recesses, a nice middle color in between and finally a nice highlight to make it pop!

Then With the blue do that same kind of method with the yellow, however instead of mixing it, just use Ultra Marines Blue in place of the yellow/white mix. Highlighting only the highest edges and areas.

For the Liche purple, just take some Warlock purple and make some lightning bolts or streak effects in the Power weapons, and then use that color the same way like with the yellow and the red, only highlighting the highest areas and surfaces. And as a bonus step here, I recommend going back over those streaks or lightning bolts with just in the center of them, just to make them pop just that much more. But if you picked Snot green for the gems, I recommend using Goblin green in place of the Warlock Purple.

With the reds take some Blood Red and use that as the highlight, same with the all the other highlights, just high the highest points and surfaces.

And finally for the Chaos black, I recommend taking some Codex Grey and just highlighting very few areas that may get some light. This is just to make the black not look so dull compared to the other colors.

And once finished you have a truly epic Iyanden Eldar, ready to strike down any foe!

Side View #2

Now remember this is not to make an awesome showcase display model, this is purely just to have an awesome eldar army finished fast and looking good. And by the way this method only took me about 30-45 minutes, and most of that was dry time for the yellow and washes. Also this is no way any indication of my actual skill as a painter this was just written up to help get a quick army painted and on the table while not sacrificing appearance.

FAILBOAT: CANCELLED is PLAY ALL NIGHT!

Play All Night is cancelled like flights leaving Chicago in a blizzard storm during Christmas.

From Isaiah, the Play All Night Organizer:
